Texas Thespians Aspiring Educator Program

We are committed to supporting the growth and development of students through a variety of leadership programs, including the Texas Thespians Aspiring Educator Program. These experiences provide students with future-ready skills that will equip the next generation of passionate, confident, and impactful theatre educators across Texas!

The Aspiring Educator Program offers focused mentorship and hands-on training to develop passionate, confident, and capable future educators. Students gain valuable experience that supports their journey into collegiate programs and careers in theatre education.  

Our cohorts will meet bi-monthly via Google Meet for training and mentorship opportunities. Hands-on opportunities will be managed through Google Classroom.  

Texas Thespians Aspiring Theatre Educators will:

• Serve as an example of the ideal Thespian
• Be in training and serve Texas Thespians for one year (October - October)
• Receive Future Ready training on:           
  • Lesson planning, TEKS. classroom management, teaching strategies
  • Resume creation, portfolio development, exploring college programs, and meeting with college representatives

   

• Create lesson plans or play studies ready for classroom use for TTM 
• Participate in State Festival tailored activities:          
  • Participate in focused workshops at the State Festival with their cohort
  • Assist with tours on Admin Day
  • Greet at Educator Breakfast
  • Write “Thank You” notes to all teachers in attendance

   

• Serve Texas Thespians by honoring Texas Thespian Teachers

Students who successfully complete the program’s initiatives are invited to return for Year 2. 

Aspiring Educator Application and Selection

Any junior or senior who is an inducted Thespian and is in good standing with their troupe may apply.  

Three students per school may apply for the Texas Thespian Aspiring Educator Program.

Texas Thespians Send a Troupe Grant Application

Eligibility Requirements

To ensure equitable access and support for developing theatre programs, applicants must meet all eligibility criteria listed below:

•  The application must be submitted by a current Thespian Troupe Director or a Future Thespian Director affiliated with an educational institution.
•  The applying troupe must not have previously attended any Texas Thespian events (including State Festival or Junior Festival).
•  The applying troupe must demonstrate clear and verifiable financial need that creates a barrier to participation.

Grant Awards

Selected troupes will receive a one-time grant award of up to $3,000, which may only be applied toward:

•  Basic registration fees for student troupe members and directors.
•  Hotel accommodations (State Festival only; Junior High grants do not include housing).
•  The grant award will not exceed $3,000 under any circumstances.
•  The grant does not cover scholarship application fees, competition entry fees, or transportation costs.

Grant Criteria

Applications will be evaluated on the following criteria:

1. Eligibility Verification

• Confirmation that the troupe has not previously attended a Texas Thespian event.

2. Demonstrated Financial Barriers

     Evidence of financial need, such as:

• Percentage of students eligible for free/reduced-price lunch.
• Annual troupe budget and program funding limitations.
• Other relevant socio-economic data or circumstances.

3. Artistic and Educational Impact

• Clear articulation of how participation in a Texas Thespians event will benefit the troupe, the school, and the broader community.

4. Program Engagement

• Overview of troupe activities, productions, and contributions to campus or community life.  

 Application Requirements

Applicants must submit the following materials:

1. Financial Barriers Statement (1 page max)  Provide a detailed narrative addressing:

•  Specific financial challenges faced by your troupe.
•  Relevant data (e.g., % of students on free/reduced lunch, current program budget, fundraising efforts).
•  Any additional context that demonstrates the need.  

2. Program Impact Statement (1 page max)  Explain the anticipated benefits of attending a Texas Thespians event, including:

•  Educational, artistic, and community impact for your students and school.
•  How does this experience align with your troupe’s goals and mission?  

3. Troupe Activities Overview (1 page max)  Summarize your troupe’s yearly activities, including:

•  Productions, Thespian activities, class projects, and community service initiatives.  

4. Roster of Attendees  Include the full names and grade levels of students and directors who will attend. Format as follows:

•  First Name Last Name – Student – Grade
•  First Name Last Name – Director  

Review Process and Notification

The Texas Thespians Grant Adjudication Committee will conduct a comprehensive review of all eligible applications. Awards will be granted to troupes demonstrating the highest level of need and potential impact. Applicants will be notified of their status via email following committee deliberations.

•  All submitted materials must be in PDF format and uploaded through the official Texas Thespians grant portal by the stated deadline.
•  Grant funds are non-transferable and may only be used for the approved purposes outlined above.

2. Applicant Impact Statement (1 page max)     The student (or director on their behalf) must provide a statement answering:

•  “How would attending a Texas Thespians event benefit my educational and artistic journey?”
•  Consider including how participation might impact the applicant's future in theatre, leadership development, and contributions to their school or community.   

3. Theatre Involvement Overview (1 page max)     Summarize the applicant's participation in theatre activities, such as:

•  Productions, Thespian events, classwork, or community service related to theatre.   

4. Resume

Please upload a single-page document that outlines the applicant's troupe involvement (resume) and includes a headshot. 

• Section 1: Personal Information – Includes your contact info and a small headshot.
• Section 2: Credits – This shows all your experience in Theatre.
• Section 3: Education & Training – Includes schools, workshops, and other classes you've attended (including private coaching).
• Section 4: Special Skills – Special skills are extremely important! Sometimes they'll be the only reason you get called in for an audition!

Texas Thespians will be offering a Career Fair for all Seniors to participate in during the State Festival for FREE.

• Looking for a start to your career?
• Looking for a summer job?
• Looking for a part-time job during college?

Must be a senior currently and willing to complete the online application with video submission. Live component on site for companies interviewing for prospective hires.

Four Categories to choose from ( you can choose two): URL or Video Format accepted.

• Performance - 2 contrasting monologues not to exceed 2 minutes
• Vocal Performance - 2 contrasting vocal performances not to exceed 2 min.
• Technical - Include your area of technical interest, a 1 minute video highlighting 2 of your best technical works and a portfolio submission highlighting 3 of your best works.
• Dance - 2 performances of different styles not to exceed 2 minutes.

Technical applicants should plan to attend the Career Fair Technical Interviews during the festival to engage in interview with each company present.

Performers (Dance, musical and acting) should plan to attend Disney workshops where live auditions will take place. It is your responsibility to engage in these activities and visit booths during the festival.

TEXAS THESPIANS HONOR CREW

Students will work with industry professionals as they develop production management skills by working at State Festivals.

 Eligibility

• Must attend a live state festival -  Corpus Christi or Grapevine
• Grades 9 - 12 and in good standing with troupe
• Strong work ethic and desire to grow as a technician
• One student per troupe may apply
• Must have director approval

Expectations

• Be professional and courteous to all attendees

• Arrival to the event on check in day and stay until the end of closing ceremonies
• Students will work a pre scheduled shift that may include: assisting in registration, with workshop technology and with production needs in performance spaces
• Students will assist with strike. 
•  Students will assist with other duties as assigned. 
• Students should be available to attend two virtual training sessions that will be held via Zoom meetings will cover the Honor Crew schedule. 
• Students should also be available to attend equipment training TBD on student availability.
•  Students must have a reliable way to receive and send communication through GroupMe

How do I become a Student Leader?Each school may only endorse 1 student for candidacy per year. Based on their application, the student will be selected as a State Thespian Officer or Ambassador. Students wishing to apply must complete the following by the application deadline (October 19, 2026 by 11:59 p.m.) to be considered.  We will not be able to accept late applications. 

Purpose  Student Leaders (State Thespians Officers and Ambassadors) exemplify and promote Texas Thespians over the course of their term.

• State Thespians Officers enhance and exhibit leadership skills, respect for individual differences, building consensus, academic excellence, and modeling appropriate behaviors at all times, both in and outside of school and Texas Thespians events. 
• Ambassadors promote public awareness of the value and impact of Theatre Education by educating, encouraging, and empowering students to use their own voice to advocate for their programs across Texas.

 Expectations of Student Leaders & Troupe Sponsor

• To serve Texas Thespians for one year (February 14th - May 31st of the following year)
• Read the Texas Thespians Student Leadership Manual Here
• To attend various meetings, workshops and festivals throughout the year
• Attend the MANDATORY Student Leader Board Retreat in the Summer (July)
• Transportation costs and rooming arrangements are the responsibility of the student and school
• Must have the ability to stay in constant communication with fellow student board, the adult board, and Thespians in general via email, video conference and social media
• Must meet deadlines and have good time management skills
• Must be proactive and responsible
• Must travel to surrounding schools to see shows and support the Thespian troupes in their region
• Must serve as an example of the ideal Thespian

Scholarship Evaluations

Scholarship Evaluations are open to any Texas High School Senior who is an INDUCTED Thespian.       

Check induction status with troupe director at http://www.schooltheatre.org      

Scholarship Evaluation fee - $20 Non - Refundable      

No limit on Senior Scholarship Applicants - Must be a registered for Texas Thespians State Festival and inducted as a Thespian.      

Scholarship Evaluation Process - 

Step 1 Have your Troupe Director Register you to attend the Texas Thespian State Festival by October 19, 2026.     

Step 2 Gather the needed audition information so you have all the things you need, in the correct format, to upload.      

Step 3 Prepare your scholarship material and review prior to submission. Double-check your uploads for spelling! Prepare your video response! Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse! 

Step 4 Fill out your Submittable Application anytime during registration. [Make sure you use your own email address]. You do not need to wait to be registered. We will double check after submission closes. DEADLINE IS ALSO OCTOBER 19, 2026.      

Step 5 Round One applicants will be reviewed and Finalists will be selected by our adjudication panel. Those selected will participate in Round 2 live interviews at Texas Thespians State Festival.     

Step 6 Scholarship recipients will be notified and recognized at the State Festival in November.      

Break a Leg! 

The Troupe Display will be rated by a panel of judges according to its content, creativity, and originality.

• We will provide a 6-foot table
• NO electricity is provided or accessible. Battery-powered items are allowed.
• Your presentation can be anything that celebrates each troupe’s identity, values, and impact through a creative, student-led storytelling display. This is your chance to show the Texas Thespians community who you are—not just what you do.
• All display items must fit on the table and can not exceed 8'0" including the height of the table. Rubric elements should be evident with a quick assessment. - Table Height + 5' = Total
• Required materials for adjudication will be completed via Submittable by October 26, 2026

Contest Requirements

ESSAY: Select one (1) of the two (2) essay choices below. All essays must be between 500-700 words (this does not include the two short answer questions.

• Prompt 1: Theater as an Economic & Social Engine: How does a theater department build stronger local communities, drive local culture, and equip students with the high-demand "soft skills" (like adaptability, emotional intelligence, and project management) needed in today's workforce? Draw upon your personal experiences, troupe initiatives, or specific productions in Texas to build your case.
• Prompt 2: Live Theater in an Ever-changing Technological World: In an era where digital communication and artificial intelligence are changing how we interact, live theater remains an inherently human, community-centered experience. Write an essay advocating for the indispensable value of theater education in public schools. In your response, address how the collaborative, empathetic, and creative skills learned in the theater department prepare students to be active, engaged, and democratic citizens in their local communities. Use personal experiences, specific productions, or observations from your time as a Texas Thespian to support your argument.

SHORT ANSWER: Please answer all of the following questions. Answers should be 2-3 sentences each.

• What is the importance of Theater in Arts Education?
• Why do you want to advocate for Theater Arts Education in Texas?

COVER PAGE: All submissions must include a cover page as the first page of the document. The cover page ensures that each entry can be properly identified and evaluated during the adjudication process.

• The cover page must include the following information:
  •  Student Name
  • School Year
  • State Festival Location
  •  Troupe Number
  •  School Name
  • The Prompt selected for the Democracy Works writing response

  Submissions that do not include a complete cover page may be considered incomplete and could delay or impact the adjudication process. Please ensure all required information is accurate and clearly presented before submitting your work.

OTHER INFO: 

• The Texas Thespians annual DemocracyWorks Essay Competition is open to all high school theater students in the State.
• Essays and short answers will be submitted via Submittable.
• Essays are protected from the moment they are submitted. By submitting an essay to Texas Thespians, you are agreeing to allow Texas Thespians to possibly publish your essay in print and/or online.

AWARDS: 

Three winners will be announced at closing ceremonies and will be awarded the following:

• Texas Thespians Medal/Pin
• Recognition on the Texas Thespians website and social media
• Letter to campus principal and district superintendent

The Dramatic Design Challenge will showcase the work of our student designers from their home campuses. Designs can be from any published play or musical of their choice. Each team must present a unified design concept, designs, and construction for Scenic, Costumes, Publicity, and Properties.

Applications are due on October 26, 2026.

GUIDELINES: Each design team will develop a unified design concept from a published play or musical of their choice and design and construct four specific items A design team needs to consist of four (4) students: a scenic designer, costume designer, publicity designer, and properties designer.

• Scenic Designer: One student in charge of the design and presentation of a set model or perspective drawing.
• Costume Designer: One student in charge of the design and presentation of one costume plate.
• Publicity Designer: One student in charge of the design and presentation of a 11”x17” poster advertising their production.
• Properties Designer: One student in charge of the design, construction and presentation of a hand-held prop.

Each team will submit a slide show (11 slides) presenting a pictorial reference of their work.

Dramatic Design One-Pager

In the Improv Challenge , the skills that are measured are:

Rules

• Schools can enter one team into the IMPROV Competition. $20 per student entered in the event.
• Teams consist of 4 - 8 troupe members (4 compete at one time based on student choice)
• All event participants must be registered for a State Festival by the registration deadline.
• Short Form IMPROV for all rounds with a round of PUNS at each match.
• Professional comedians with judge to determine winners.
• Dress code encouraged are troupe shirts and jeans, but not required 
• Students must be present for their round or will be disqualified.
• After each round your team will be alerted that they have moved on or have been eliminated.

• Schools are allowed entry in either Solo, Duet, or Group (3-16) Lip Sync.
• Entries will be evaluated LIVE at State Festivals     
  • The top entry will be selected to perform at Closing Ceremonies
• A sound system will be provided.
• Songs must be "classroom appropriate" (no language or explicit content allowed)
• Prompt "Tale of the Unsung Hero".

Submission needs to fit the following requirements:

• The total performance time (once the slate is complete) cannot exceed 5 minutes.     
  • Songs may be edited for time or as a mashup.
  • If time is exceeded, the entry will be disqualified.
• Performers will not be judged on singing.
• Up to 6 chairs and one table can be used and will be provided.
• Hand Props and Costumes are permitted and encouraged in the competition.
• Fog/Haze/Perishable Materials (Food, water, etc.) are not permitted
• Required materials for adjudication will be completed via Submittable by October 26, 2026

Rules for the contest.

• All teammates should be dressed in all black
• One student per school is allowed to submit an entry.
• Content must be original, school-appropriate, and respectful. No offensive language or discriminatory material.
• Performance is limited to 3 minutes per act, with no props, costumes, or individual crowd work allowed.
• Judging will focus on originality, timing, and audience engagement, with positive feedback from a supportive panel of judges.
• All participants must submit a video of their routine prior to festival. 
• All participants must submit a written transcript/script of their routine. 
• Festival staff reserve the right to stop any performance if festival’s code of conduct and guidelines are not followed.
• DIRECTORS ARE REQUIRED TO BE PRESENT AT THEIR STUDENTS LIVE PERFORMANCE. Directors do not have to be there for the entire showcase but must be present for their studetns performance.
• Required materials for adjudication will be completed via Submittable before festival.

Rules

• Teams of 1 - 4 are allowed to collaborate on the challenge. You may use actors to complete the script/voice over requirements
• Entrants will use the scene provided to create the sound design.
• All elements of the sound design must be original student work. If it is in the public domain, students need to change or update to create their own vision.
• Directors will sign off that work is original work.
• The script/prompt may not be altered in any way. The order of events and how the script/direction is navigated is what is being judged.
• The time period may be changed as long as it is supported by the final product and concept statement.
• All designs are due by midnight on October 26, 2026. 
• Winners will be announced at each festival with the top sound design for each festival being played during opening ceremonies.

What to Prepare

1. Design Justification (PDF)

• 7-10 sentences explaining the thought process, any time period updates, challenges you faced and how you overcame them.

2. Submit 3-5 screenshots on how you made the digitally edited or created Sound FX or made changes to the original source material for the other elements (JPEG or PNG)

3. Submit a PDF or Word Doc of your sound cues on the script provided

2. Final Track will include

• 1 - 2 minutes in length
• At least 2 Music Tracks- Orchestral Only, No Vocals
• At least 2 Foley Sound Effects
• At least 2 Voice Overs
• At least 2 Ambient Sound Effects
• If a sound design is done effectively you will have many more than the minimum

Rules

• Can be a solo, duet, or a group of 4.  
• The type of lighting that you have on your home campus (listed in required documents) will be considered in your scoring. The purpose is to use lighting you have available to accurately convey the meaning of the song.
• The film footage should be of the whole stage and be one continuous shot. You are not permitted to edit in various clips, cuts, or close ups.
• Entrants will use the music provided to create the theatrical lighting design.
• Entrants should create their own lighting designs and not copy from other sources. Directors will sign off that work is original work for this years competition prompt.
• The music may not be altered in any way. The interpretation of the music and how the music is navigated is what is being judged.
• Students are allowed to use 3 scenic elements. No students/actors may be used as bodies on stage.
• Haze is permitted based on individual home campus guidelines.
• The use of projections is not permissible in this competition at this time.
• The use of a cyclorama is permitted but no other types of reflective or specialty curtains can be used.
• All designs are due by midnight on October 26, 2026. Winners will be announced at each festival with the top lighting design for each festival being played during opening ceremonies.

Rules

• ​All teammates should be in dressed in all black
• Teams are composed of a minimum of 6 students and a maximum of 10 students. These students may be used however you see fit during your allotted time.
• Students will be given a scene ahead of time to be designed, memorized, and rehearsed.
• Students will be provided specific scenic elements for their use at their own discretion. See list of items provided on next page.     

            -Note that the set items we will be providing are 1/2 scale UIL set pieces made of foam.

•  6 LED lighting instruments will be provided for the students to utilize.     

            -These will be hooked up prior to your time.

             - Instruments will be daisy-chained and will have limited mobility.

             - You should have a minimum of 3 lighting cues.

•  You will need to do a sound check prior to beginning your performance. This needs to be done with your own sound files.     

              - You will be required to play an “Official Sound Check” provided to you.

              - You should have a minimum of 1 music cue and 1 sound effect.

•  The maximum time allowed for completion of this event is 10 minutes.     

              - Teams will be cutoff at the 10 minute mark and will need to restore as safely and quickly as possible.

•  During their 10 minute time slot (beginning after slating), students will need to:     

             - Set up their set, lights, and sound.

              - Perform their short scene.

              - Strike their items back to the designated location in the competition space.

• Deductions are listed on the rubric.
• The approximate size of the performance space will be 20ft x 20ft

Texas Thespians Hall of Fame

Purpose The Texas Thespians Hall of Fame was established to honor adults who have dedicated themselves to promoting Texas educational theatre, creating a lasting legacy through sustained commitment to the organization and its mission. 

Eligibility Requirements

1. Years of Service — Candidates must have given 20 or more years of service to Texas educational theatre.
2. Sustained Involvement — Candidates must demonstrate consistent, ongoing involvement with Texas Thespians throughout their career, rather than isolated or short-term contributions.
3. Contribution to Growth — Candidates must have made meaningful contributions to the growth and development of the organization.

Selection Criteria

Members of the Hall of Fame are selected based on:

• Dedication to Theatre Performance in Texas — A demonstrated, career-long commitment to theatre education, performance and/or technical theater within the state.
• Alignment with Texas Thespians Aims and Ideals — Support for and advancement of the aims and ideals of Texas Thespians.
• Standards of Excellence — Contributions to establishing and maintaining continued standards of excellence in Texas theatre education.
• Legacy — Evidence of a lasting legacy in the field, reflecting a career that has shaped and elevated Texas educational theatre for future generations.

Texas Thespians Technical Trailblazer of the Year

Purpose This award recognizes an educator who serves as an innovator and visionary for Texas Thespians, setting new ground and establishing new standards for technical educational theatre.

Eligibility Requirements

1. Educator Role — Candidates must be an active educator involved in Texas educational theatre.
2. Demonstrated Innovation — Candidates must show clear evidence of introducing new ideas, methods, or approaches to technical educational theatre.
3. Impact on Standards — Candidates must have established new standards or benchmarks in one or more technical theatrical aspects.

Selection Criteria

Nominees are evaluated based on:

• Vision — Evidence of forward-thinking ideas that push educational technical theatre in new directions.
• Innovation — Original or groundbreaking contributions that distinguish the nominee from conventional practice.
• Influence on the Field — The degree to which the nominee's work has shifted standards, practices, or expectations within Texas educational theatre.

Texas Thespians Administrator of the Year 

Purpose This award is presented by Texas Thespians to honor outstanding administrators who have demonstrated exemplary support for educational theatre.

Eligibility Requirements

1. Administrative Role — Candidates must be a school administrator (e.g., principal, assistant principal, fine arts director or coordinator, superintendent, or other campus/district-level administrator).
2. Demonstrated Support for Educational Theatre — Candidates must show a clear record of supporting theatre education programs at their campus or within their district.
3. Contribution to Texas Thespians — Candidates must have contributed to Texas Thespians as an organization, beyond support of their local program alone.

Selection Criteria

Nominees are evaluated based on:

• Exemplary Support for Educational Theatre — Evidence of advocacy, resource allocation, scheduling support, or other actions that have enabled theatre programs to thrive.
• Contribution to Texas Thespians — Involvement in or support of Texas Thespians initiatives, events, or growth.
• Impact — The tangible difference the administrator's support has made for theatre students, educators, and programs.

Texas Thespian's Golden Apple Award

Purpose The Texas Thespians Distinguished Educator Award was established to honor adults who have dedicated themselves to promoting Texas educational theatre, recognizing both their sustained past service and their continued commitment to the field going forward.

Eligibility Requirements

1. Years of Service — Candidates must have given 10 or more years of service to Texas educational theatre.
2. Sustained Involvement — Candidates must demonstrate consistent, ongoing involvement with Texas Thespians throughout their career, rather than isolated or short-term contributions.
3. Continued Commitment — Candidates must be positioned and expected to continue contributing years of service to the field.

Texas Thespian's Green Apple Award

Purpose This award is presented by Texas Thespians to recognize a new theatre educator whose passion and drive stand out early in their career.

Eligibility Requirements

1. Experience Level — Candidates must be a director with 1–5 years of teaching experience.
2. New Educator Status — This award is intended specifically for educators early in their teaching career.
3. Texas Thespians Involvement - This award is intended for candidates that are involved with Texas Thespians at their home campus or at the organizational level. 

Selection Criteria

Nominees are evaluated based on:

• Passion — Evident enthusiasm and love for educational theatre and teaching.
• Drive — Demonstrated motivation and initiative in building or growing their theatre program.
• Early Impact — Signs of promise and positive influence on students and their program despite being early in their career.

Texas Thespians Premier Communities for Theatre Education

     Texas Thespians is an affiliate of the Educational Theatre Association and includes numerous branches of the organization which offer multiple opportunities to Texas Theatre Educators and middle and high school students throughout our state. Our mission is to create an artistic, educational and professional network for theatre arts educators, students, professionals, and enthusiasts to share ideas and support the effort to have theatre arts recognized in all phases of education and lifelong learning. 

     The mission of the Educational Theatre Association (EdTA) is to shape lives through theatre education. EdTA honors student achievement in theatre, supports teachers by providing professional resources, and influences public opinion that theatre education is essential for building life skills.

     EdTA is an outgrowth of the International Thespian Society (ITS), the only theatre honorary of its kind for middle and high school students. Since 1929, ITS and it's troupes have affirmed the quality of affiliated theatre programs, bringing credibility and distinction to both students and schools. 

     Texas Thespians is pleased to recognize school districts that support innovative approaches to theatre education, active involvement in The Educational Theatre Association’s International Thespian Society, The Texas Thespians Chapter, and achieve a high level of excellence in theatre education.

     School districts that meet and/or satisfy the point requirements will be recognized as a Texas Thespians Premier Community for Theatre Education. This designation is determined by the total number of points a district is eligible to earn in each category. Districts are encouraged to apply annually to receive recognition for commitment to excellence in theatre.

     Winners will be announced and recognized annually.   

Application Window: August 15, 2026 - December 1, 2026

Award winners receive the following:

1. Official certificate
2. Customizable press release template
3. Recognition on Texas Thespians Social media platforms
4. Digital signature banner
5. Letter of commendation from Texas Thespians to the school board and superintendent

The Mark Batts Memorial Technical Theatre Grant, presented by Texas Thespians, honors the memory and contributions of Mark Batts, a revered figure in the technical theatre world. This grant is designed to support and encourage high school technical theatre programs across Texas, enabling them to enhance their productions, purchase equipment, and provide professional development opportunities for students and educators.

Grant Description:

The Mark Batts Technical Theatre Grant offers financial assistance to high school theatre programs in Texas with a focus on technical theatre. The grant aims to foster innovation and excellence in lighting, video, sound, set design, costume design, stage management, and other technical aspects of theatre production. Texas Thespians hope to inspire the next generation of technical theatre professionals and enthusiasts by providing funds.

Eligibility:

1. Applicants: The grant is open to all Texas high schools with an active theatre program.
2. Program Focus: The applying program must demonstrate an emphasis on technical theatre, including, but not limited to, set design, lighting, video, sound, costume design, and stage management.
3. Membership: The applying school must be an active member of Texas Thespians.

Grant Guidelines:

1. Application Process:

• Proposal Submission: Schools must submit a detailed proposal outlining the specific technical theatre needs and how the grant funds will be utilized. This could include equipment purchases, software licenses, professional development for students and educators, or other relevant expenses.                    
  • Budget Breakdown: The proposal must include a detailed budget that indicates the total amount requested and itemizes all anticipated costs.
  • Project Timeline: Proposals must include a timeline for the project or purchases, highlighting key milestones and completion dates.
  • Supporting Materials: Schools are encouraged to include supporting materials such as photographs, sketches, or videos that showcase their current technical theatre work and future plans.   

      

2. Award Criteria

• Innovation and Creativity: Proposals that demonstrate creative approaches to technical theatre challenges will be given priority.
• Impact on Students: Consideration will be given to how the grant will benefit students, enhance their learning experiences, and prepare them for future opportunities in technical theatre.
• Need-Based Consideration: Schools with limited access to resources and funding will be given special consideration.
• Sustainability: Proposals that outline how the benefits of the grant will be sustained beyond the initial funding period will be favored.

This award is only for programs that have educational value, not cosmetic needs. Troupes should not apply for assistance with new curtains, seating, or areas for which the district is responsible.

• LED or Intelligent lighting that can be designed by students

• Digital media software to create backdrops
• Rental equipment assistance as long as students are incorporated into the design of the project

Shop Tools or Materials - that will have direct student use. 

Programs or Training - students must be present and attend training. 

Innovation - out-of-the-box ideas that would greatly benefit student learning and mastery of Technical Theatre objectives.

4. Reporting and Accountability:

• Final Report: Grant recipients must submit a final report detailing how the funds were used, the outcomes achieved, and the impact on their technical theatre program.
• Acknowledgment: Grant recipients are expected to acknowledge Texas Thespians and the Mark Batts Memorial Technical Theatre Grant in promotional materials and performances that benefit from the grant.

• Award Announcement: Texas Thespians Educator Conference, January 2027
• Project Completion: Projects funded by the grant must be completed by April 1, 2027.

Eligibility

• The application must be submitted by a Thespian Troupe Director or Future Thespian Director.
• The applying teacher will receive a one-time grant to cover the basic registration fee only. 
• This grant’s adjudication committee will make their selections and recipients will be notified of their grant award.

Grant Criteria

• The teacher applying must be able to demonstrate financial barriers.
• Letter of support from your administrator to participate in Texas Thespians events.

Required Documentation: 

1. Please upload your Administrator statement of support on official school letterhead that includes Administrative support for attending a Texas Thespians event.
2. Please upload a single-page document that shares the financial barriers as well as a detailed statement on the "benefits of attending" a Texas Thespians event. Example: What are the individual's financial barriers and how will this Grant benefit their theatrical goals? This is your chance to justify needs as it pertains to the Send a Teacher Grant.
3. Please upload a single-page document that outlines the applicant's troupe involvement (resume) and includes a headshot.
